Dear Students and Parents:

Welcome back to school! I am excited to have students back in our hallways and classrooms. Their energy and enthusiasm is contagious and I know that I speak for all of our teachers and staff when I say that it is a privilege to be able to spend 7 hours a day with them.

I want to thank all of the parents and students who have made our “back to school” time one of the best in recent memory. The High School Student Council worked closely with our teachers and staff to welcome all of the middle and high
school students back to campus on Monday morning. It was a high-energy event with our teachers and staff leading the kids in the Miner fight song.

I also want to thank all of the students who have chosen to walk, ride their bikes, or ride the buses to school. As you know, parking is limited on the campus and traffic coming into town in the morning, especially when combined with commuters and construction traffic, can be slow. The parents and students have done a great job of making this community truly a pedestrian town.

This week I was joined by our staff, members of the Neenan construction team, and even our Board President, Paul Reich, in directing traffic and ensuring that the students arrive and depart our campus in a safe manner. It has been fun to greet the students, wave to the parents driving, and watching a smooth drop off and pick up.

As you know, the school construction project, which began in early June, is slated to continue through the balance of this school year. We have made great progress, but a lot remains to be done.

This summer we completed the first steps and began the remodel of the cafeteria. We have added a second floor to that area (which will become art, science and STEM rooms) and expanded the first floor of the cafeteria to the east. This is only the first step of the process—beginning this fall the cafeteria will be further expanded to the south, creating a café environment with southern windows to take advantage of our views to the south. It is interesting to note that the original cafeteria had 2,276 square feet spread over two levels. The remodeled space today has 2,797 square feet, and after the addition to the south the completed cafeteria will have 3,805 square feet (and increase of 67% in size). Next summer the kitchen will be remodeled to increase its capacity.

The walls of the new full-size gymnasium were installed this week. Beginning the week of the 14th the steel frame for the new entrance, administration offices, classrooms, and new cafeteria expansion will begin to be installed. The goal is to have all of the new spaces fully enclosed by mid December so that interior work can begin. Most of the work on the new spaces will be completed by late winter 2016.

Please continue to read our Sunday construction ad in the Daily Planet for a look at the progress. And do not hesitate to contact our offices if you have any questions or suggestions regarding the construction or traffic. You can also follow me on Twitter @ TSDMiners.

Thanks again for giving us the opportunity to educate your children.
