Dear TSD Families,

I hope the school year has gotten off to a great start for all of you.  Things have been moving along well in our schools as we all settle into the routine of the school year.  I am excited for all the learning I have seen going on.

I had the pleasure of seeing students Otto and Enzo Adolphi and their family backpacking in Navajo Basin last weekend.  Otto and his mom beat me to the top of Mt. Wilson on Sunday and here is a picture of them coming off the (pretty scary) summit block.  I am so impressed by the very cool things our students do.  As I sit here writing this, our Play in 48 students are finishing up a very intense but very fun weekend of artistic creation.

As I’m sure you have heard, the Telluride Film Festival provided great films for our students the Thursday prior to Film Festival weekend.  Our grade K-2 students had the opportunity to see Ponyo, and our grade 3-12 students had the opportunity to see the world premiere of Good Night Oppy.  Thank you TFF for bringing these films to our students.

This past week, CDE released preliminary Performance Frameworks after a 2-year pause.  The performance frameworks, part of the state’s accountability system, are calculated using statewide data, including academic growth, academic achievement and postsecondary and workforce readiness data (e.g., graduation, dropout, matriculation rates).

Telluride School District is 1 of 11 districts (out of 184 total) rated at the highest rating level based on these preliminary results.  Due to the excellence and dedication of our teachers, staff, and students, Telluride School District has maintained its status of Accredited with Distinction.

With that said, please note that 72 school districts in the state received the designation of Insufficient State Data.  This occurs when there is not enough reportable data for a school or district.  This year, this is occurring because the department cannot run three-year frameworks which impacts smaller systems. Some schools and districts also experienced low participation on state tests.

The CDE News Release on the Performance Frameworks can be found at: http://www.cde.state.co.us/communications/090822newsrelease-frameworks

And detailed information can be found on the CDE website at: https://www.cde.state.co.us/accountability/performanceframeworkresults

Cheryl Miller, BOE President, and I will be at La Cocina for our first monthly coffee talk this coming Friday morning at 8:15am.  Please plan to join us with any questions you have or just to chat.

In closing, please join me in remembering the significance of this day in the history of our nation and our world.  It is hard for me to think of September 11, 2001 without feeling sad, but it also makes me more committed to the work that we do to educate our students to be the best they can be and empower them to make the world a better place!
