AVID’s mission is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college and career readiness and success in a global society.

Advancement Via Individual Determination, or AVID, is a college and career readiness system designed to increase the number of students who enroll and succeed in higher education and their lives beyond high school. The AVID College Readiness System is a catalyst for developing a school culture that closes the achievement, expectation, and opportunity gaps many students face. It also prepares all students for success in a global society.

AVID is designed to eliminate the achievement gap through a student-centered approach by facilitating the development of academic and social skills for students. AVID curriculum and practices also support students in expanding their understanding of higher education, including potential majors, the financial aid process, and admissions and scholarship applications. Learn more about AVID.

AVID Elementary

AVID Elementary is a foundational component of the AVID College Readiness System. It supports AVID's mission to close the achievement gap. This gap affects college readiness and success in our global society. AVID Elementary builds on the same learning bases as AVID Secondary. Its design fits into everyday teaching in all elementary classes. This keeps a consistent structure across schools.

AVID Elementary offers implementation resources, professional development, and an integral philosophy. These offerings focus on the idea that students can learn a growth mindset. With this mindset, AVID students follow their dreams and fulfill their aspirations.

AVID Elementary helps students develop the academic habits they need for long-term success. These skills are suitable for their age and challenging. Children learn organization, study skills, communication, and self-advocacy.

  • During each stage of learning, AVID Elementary incorporates:

    • Student Success Skills encompass communication skills (e.g., listening, speaking, writing), self-advocacy, and study skills.

    • Organizational Skills, both mental and physical. Students are given administrative tools and time management, goal-setting, and note-taking strategies.

    • WICOR Lessons emphasize instruction on writing to learn, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading to learn in all content areas.

    • Partnerships among students, classrooms, grade levels, schools, families, and communities.

AVID Secondary

High School AVID Members

At the middle and high school levels, AVID instructional practices are used schoolwide, and the AVID Elective class adds an extra layer of support for students who choose to participate.

With the AVID Elective, students receive additional academic, social, and emotional support for one period a day to help them succeed in rigorous courses. AVID Secondary curriculum and practices develop writing, inquiry, collaborative, organizational, and reading skills among students. AVID Elective classes also assist students in expanding their knowledge of higher education, majors, financial aid processes, and admissions and scholarship applications.
